External fixators are attached to bone using tensioned wires and/or pins. The external parts of the frame are used to achieve fracture stability and at times gradual angular, linear and rotational control of bone segments. They may be used temporarily to achieve soft tissue healing in open fractures and supplemented with an internal fixator at a later stage, or they may be left in place until bone union is achieved.
